Conduit

Conduit is a type of tubing that you can feed your cable through, it can be made up of plastic, fibre or metal. Electrical conduit can provide the structure, cable protection and support for the cable you run through it. Electrical conduit is a safe and tidy solution when installing single or bunched cable together.
Cable conduit is the perfect solution to support the installation of electrical cable, running cable underground, through walls or when cabling needs protection in an exposed area.
When choosing your conduit cable it’s important that you choose the correct material for the project you are undertaking, this is to ensure the safety of yourself and others, also to promote high performance of the tubing. Typical conduit materials that you will find from RS Components are nylon, steel, galvanised steel, PVC and stainless steel amongst a whole host of others.
Below are some of the most commonly used cable conduit and applications, please note that there are more variants available.
• Flexible metallic conduit, formally known as FMC’s is a strong, hardwearing conduit that gives good protection, easy installation and is effortlessly flexible. Please note that this type of flexible conduit is not waterproof.
• Flexible metal conduit, this is a great solution for areas that include tight bends or when you need to position the conduit at an angle.
• Liquid tight flexible metal conduit, this type of conduit is a good choice for covering cable which requires flexibility and protection from areas prone to moisture.
• Rigid metal conduit is one the hardest wearing, this type of metal conduit is a good solution for cable management in extreme conditions. As the name suggests, this type of conduit cannot be bent, corner pieces and bends are available to join the pieces together.
• PVC plastic conduit is predominantly installed in wet locations, it’s available in a flexible or rigid type. Plastic conduit can be easily attached to one another with PVC adhesive or connection adaptors. To ensure safety, a green wire can be wrapped around the conduit at the connecting points to achieve the correct grounding, this is because PVC conduit is non- conductive.
• Intermediate metal conduit (IMC conduit) is a thick and galvanised steel, it’s mostly used for outdoor installations, exposed garages and areas where the cable conduit is exposed to potential damage or corrosion. IMC conduit is a type of electrical conduit and is available as a flexible or rigid type.
